Dog Licenses

At this time our offices are CLOSED to the public to comply with the Governor’s Order
Even though the town office is closed to the public, you can still register your dog by April 1st  June 1st (as required by state law).

Here’s how:
   -  Renew by mail or email (see below for information on fees). If your dog has received a new rabies vaccine since you last registered we will need a copy of the new rabies certificate.
   -  Register a new dog by including a copy of a current rabies certificate, owner’s name, address and contact information, dog breed, color, age, size (small, medium or large) and date of spay or neuter.
   -  Payments may be made by check (mail or drop box). You can also make payments online at (convenience fees will be charged).

Once we have received all required information we will mail the license and tag.

Dog licenses are available at the Town Clerk’s Office. Their office hours 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. License fees may be paid with cash, check, and credit or debit cards (there is an additional convenience fee for credit and debit cards).

Renew by Mail

To renew by mail please include:

  • 2019 Essex License Number
  • Copy of Current Rabies Certificate
  • Correct Fee
  • Self-Addressed, Stamped Envelope

New Registrations

All new registrations (licenses) must be completed in person at the Town Clerk’s Office. A copy of the current Rabies Certificate will be required.  

Cost of Dog Licenses

Before April 1 June 1, 2020:

  • Neutered/Spayed Dog - $ 9
  • Un-Neutered/Spayed - $13

After April 1 June 1, 2020:

  • Neutered/Spayed Dog - $11
  • Un-Neutered/Spayed - $17

Cats & Other Animals

There are no licensing requirements for cats or other animals. If you have an animal related problem call animal control at 802-878-1333.
