Parcel / Tax Maps


The tax maps are not to be misconstrued as a survey or to be used as a survey, used for property boundary description, conveyance, or determination of legal title. Any use as such is strictly prohibited. They represent an approximate location of property lines only.

Property descriptions must be obtained from surveys or deeds. Town-wide tax parcel map compilation should be interpreted as the best available compilation, but should not ever be substituted for survey or deed information.

Accessing Documents

If you require a legal document, many of the parcels have been surveyed by a legal surveyor and the maps are usually filed in the Essex Land Records in the Clerk's office.

All of the tax maps are 24 by 36 inches in size, may be view, printed, or downloaded and consist of both the City of Essex Junction and the Essex Town parcels.

Interpreting the Numbers

The parcel number for each parcel (also known as parcel ID or account number) is how Essex identifies all of the properties. This number is used in the grand list, on tax bills, for property transfers, etc.

All parcel numbers are a ten digit number split into four sections as follows:

  • The first digit is always a 1 or a 2 (A 1 = a city property and a 2 = a town property)
  • The next three digits are the tax map page (even if the page is only one number, i.e.: 003)
  • The next three digits are the parcel number
  • The last three digits are the parcel split, if one exists


  • Tax map 10, parcel 57 would have a parcel ID of 2-010-057-000
  • Tax map 29, parcel 215-1 would have a parcel ID of 1-029-215-001
