Town Meeting Preview 

The Town Meeting Preview takes place during a regular Selectboard meeting and provides voters with an early look at the articles on the ballot. This is an opportunity to provide public comments, ask questions, and learn more.

WHERE: Town Offices at 81 Main St., Essex Jct, Vermont and on Zoom

Town Showcase & Informational Hearing

By Vermont statute (17 V.S.A. § 2680), the Selectboard must hold a public informational hearing when a town uses the Australian Ballot system of voting on any public question. The hearing must be held within the 10 days preceding the Essex Town Meeting when the ballot system is used. Preceding the Informational Hearing, the Town of Essex invites the public to a Town Showcase event.

TIME: Town Showcase begins at 6:00 pm, Informational Hearing begins at 7:30 pm
WHERE: Essex Middle School, 60 Founders Road, Essex, Vermont and on Zoom

Girl Scout Troop #61845 will be greeting attendees and members of Boy Scout Troop #635 and the Cub Scout Arrow of Light and Webelos will be opening the meeting with the Flag Ceremony. A soloist from the Essex High School Chamber Choir will be performing at the start of the Informational Hearing.

Senior members of the community may request a ride from our Essex Parks and Recreation Senior Van service. Please schedule by calling 878-6940 before March 1st at 12 noon. Please leave your name, address, and phone number.

Town Showcase and Soup Night

March 4th - 6:00 pm

Arrive early before the Informational Hearing and visit with Town departments, committees, commissions, and boards. There will be freebies, informational handouts, and time to visit with your neighbors - a nice break and opportunity to gather during the winter months.

THE LEGAL VOTERS OF THE TOWN OF ESSEX IN THE COUNTY OF CHITTENDEN ARE HEREBY NOTIFIED AND WARNED TO MEET AT ESSEX MIDDLE SCHOOL, 60 FOUNDERS ROAD, ESSEX, VERMONT ON TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 2024 TO TRANSACT THE FOLLOWING BUSINESS BY AUSTRALIAN BALLOT. THE POLLS FOR SAID BALLOT SHALL BE OPEN FROM 7:00 AM UNTIL 7:00 PM AT WHICH TIME THEY SHALL BE CLOSED.

 

Article I.              Shall the Town adopt a budget for the fiscal year July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025 as recommended by the Selectboard in the amount of $16,106,421?

 

Article II.             Shall the Town of Essex adopt the proposed 2024 Town Plan?

 

Article III.            Shall the voters require the Town Annual Report to list the location of commercial properties that received a municipal tax stabilization benefit within the report fiscal year, the amount of that benefit and property owners? (Advisory)

 

Article IV.            Shall the voters require the Town Annual Report to list the names, position titles, salaries and benefits of all town employees within the annual report fiscal year? (Advisory)

 

Article V.              Election of the following:

Moderator, 1 vacancy (1-year term)

Selectboard, 1 vacancy (3-year term)

 

 

The legal voters of the Town of Essex are further notified that voter qualification, registration and absentee voting relative to said annual meeting shall be in accordance with the Vermont Statutes Annotated.

Absentee/Early Voting

Early/Absentee Ballots Requests and Deadline: Ballots will be available by February 14, 2024. Request your ballot at the Essex Town Clerk’s office, 81 Main Street, Essex Jct., VT, call 879-0413 option 6, or email clerk@essex.org.  Early/Absentee ballots may also be requested online at https://mvp.vermont.gov/. If requesting ballots to be mailed, request in advance to allow for ballots to be returned to the clerk’s office no later than 4:30 p.m. on Monday, March 4, 2024. Ballots returned on Tuesday, March 5th must be delivered directly to the polling place (Essex Middle School) by 7:00 pm. The last day to request an Early/Absentee ballot is 4:30 pm on Monday, March 4, 2024.

 Voted ballots may be returned by:

  • mailing back to the Town Office, return postage will be included; 
  • dropping off at the Town Office, 81 Main Street, Essex Junction. A drop box by the entrance door is available for convenient after-hours drop off; or
  • returning ballot in person at the polls by 7:00 pm on March 5th at the Essex Middle School.  

The last date to drop off the ballot in the drop box at the Town Office at 81 Main Street is 6:00 am on March 5. If mailing your ballot, be certain to allow enough time for ballots to reach the Town Office.
