Shared Services Agreements with the City of Essex Junction

Background

The Village of Essex Junction voters passed a non-binding advisory article during their April 2021 Annual Meeting for the Village Board of Trustees to draft a new charter to create an independent City of Essex Junction, since the vote to reconsider the Plan of Merger with the Town of Essex failed.

Since 1958, there have been multiple attempts to either merge or separate the Town and the Village, none of which resulted in a change that was approved legislatively. On April 20, 2022, the Governor signed H.491 into law. Essex Junction became a city on July 1, 2022.

The City of Essex Junction has contracted with the Town of Essex for services for both a transitional phase and longer term.
